Lithuania took over European Union presidency on 1 July

Lithuania has assumed the Presidency of the European Union (EU) for the first time, holding the office from 1 July to 31 December 2013.

The new presidential triumvirate - the system created in 2009 by the Treaty of Lisbon - will therefore include Lithuania, Ireland (previous Presidency) and Greece (due to assume the Presidency in the first half of 2014).

In cooperation with its partners, the Lithuanian Presidency will focus its activities on achieving three goals: A Credible Europe, strengthening the ground for financial stability; a Growing Europe, deepening and integrating the Single Market; and an Open Europe, seeking closer integration of the EU and its Eastern Partners.
