Fátima Barros speaks at the Global Symposium for Regulators 2013


Speaking at a session which focused on the financing of the universal service, Fátima Barros, chairman of ANACOM's Management Board, has taken part in the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR13), which was held from 3 to 5 July 2013, in Warsaw, Poland.

At the Symposium, Fátima Barros addressed the reality of the universal service of electronic communications in Portugal, explaining the reasons that continue to justify its maintenance. She also explained the functioning of the compensation fund recently established in Portugal to finance the net costs of the universal service. The arrangements made in Portugal have sparked interest among a number of other regulators, who are keen to know more details about the Portuguese system, possibly with a view to adopting some of the solutions presented by the Chairman in their own countries.

The session, moderated by Magdalena Gaj, Chairman of the Polish Regulator (UKE), was also attended by Vijayalakshmy Gupta, of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Monehela Posholi, of the Lesotho Communications Authority, Gonzalo Ruiz Díaz, of the Organismo Supervisor de la Inversión privada en Telecomunicaciones (Osiptel) of Peru, and Eric Loeb, from AT&T.
