Fixed service sees increase in VoIP take-up

At the end of 3rd Quarter 2013 (3Q13), the fixed telephone service (FTS) in Portugal reported a penetration rate of 43.3 main accesses per 100 inhabitants. The penetration rate among direct access residential customers was reported at 55.4 per 100 conventional dwellings.

In total, there were 4.5 million main telephone accesses in Portugal, increasing 0.2 percent over the previous quarter (2Q13) and falling 0.5 percent compared to the same quarter of 2012 (3Q12), coming in within the forecast range resulting from the estimated historical trend.

The growth in VoIP/VoB accesses (2.6 percent), especially supported over high-speed networks (optical fibre-FTTH/B and cable TV networks) offset the declines reported in analogue accesses (-0.6 percent) and ISDN accesses (-2.5 percent).

The number of installed public pay-telephones continued to decline, falling to about 23 thousand in 3Q13 (a decrease of 1.1 per cent over the previous quarter and of 5.9 per cent compared to 2Q13).

At the end of this period, Grupo PT was responsible for 56.5 percent of total main accesses (a decline of 0.4 percentage points compared to 2Q13). Grupo ZON/Optimus was the second largest operator with a market share of 31.8 percent.

The trend in the volume of FTS voice minutes is slightly below the forecast range resulting from the estimated trend and seasonal effects, decreasing 6.5 percent compared to 2Q13 and 4.1 percent when compared to 3Q12.

During the quarter, on average per month, each main access accounted for 115 minutes in fixed-fixed calls, 12 minutes in fixed-mobile calls and 8 minutes in international calls.

In the period from January to September 2013, total revenues from stand-alone FTS and from bundles of services including FTS totalled 1.126 billion euros, 1.6 percent higher than the revenues reported over the same period of 2012.

According to Marktest's Barómetro Telecomunicações (Telecommunications Barometer), average monthly household expenditure on bundled offers that include the FTS ranged between 80.3 euros in the case of the quadruple-play bundle [FTS+Internet access services (IAS)+subscription television service(STVS)+mobile telephone service (MTS)1] and 27.7 euros in the case of FTS+IAS. The average monthly charge for bundles with FTS+STVS was 31 euros and was 49.8 euros in the case of the FTS+IAS+STVS bundle.
