Fixed Internet growth driven by optical fibre technology


At the end of September, there were about 2.5 million fixed internet accesses in Portugal, 1.7% more than in the previous quarter and 6.7 more than in the same period of 2012. Optical fibre was the technology that contributed most to this trend, growing 4.4% in this period and 26.8% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, Portugal had 3.7 million Internet users who actually used mobile broadband, increasing 5.6% over the previous quarter, an increase that has been driven by the growing number of smartphone users.

In the period being reported, 89.7% of customers of the internet access service using fixed broadband had acquired the service as part of a bundle of services. About 9% were double-play customers (with TV or fixed telephone or MTS) and about 80.7% had a triple-play bundle (with TV+fixed telephone or TV+MTS) or quadruple-play bundle (with TV+fixed telephone+MBB or MTS) or quintuple play bundles.

The main technology used for fixed broadband Internet access continues to be ADSL (43.6 percent of total accesses, followed by cable modem (38.5%) and Internet over optical fibre - FTTH/B (17.1%).

In the case of mobile broadband, about 23.5% of broadband Internet accesses corresponded to cards/USB modems.

Grupo PT's share of fixed accesses was reported at 51.1%, around 0.4 percentage points below the previous quarter. For the second consecutive quarter, Vodafone was the provider that added the largest number of subscribers in net terms, reporting a share of 5.1 percent at the end of the quarter (+0.6 percent compared to 2Q13).

As regards provider shares of active mobile broadband customers, TMN had a share of 43.2% of customers, followed by Vodafone and Grupo ZON Optimus with 36.8% and 19.8%, respectively.

At the end of 3rd quarter of 2013, total revenues from the fixed Internet access service (stand-alone and from bundles of services that include the fixed Internet access service) amounted to 782 million euros, an increase of 5.9% compared to the same period of 2012.

Revenues from the mobile Internet access service totalled 260 million in 3Q13, 1.1% lower than reported over the same period of 2012.
