On 10 December 2013, the European Parliament (EP) approved the European Union (EU) civil protection mechanism for 2014-2016, which seeks to strengthen coordination between Member States when it comes to preventing, preparing for and responding to natural disasters, such as forest fires, earthquakes or storms, and also to man-made disasters, such as oil spills. The mechanism will also facilitate intervention outside the EU.
