Postal traffic recovers 2.2% in 1st quarter

In the first quarter of 2014, total postal traffic in Portugal increased by 2.2% compared to the previous quarter (with 233.9 million items reported), and decreased 8.7% compared to the first quarter of 2013. Postal traffic was reported at 22.3 postal items per capita.

Express mail traffic, representing 4.6% of total traffic, increased by 6.6% from the previous quarter and by 6.1% percent year-on-year.

Non-express mail traffic, which constitutes 95.4% of traffic, increased 2.7% over the quarter and declined by 9.3% compared to the first quarter of 2013.  Approximately 93.3% of this traffic is encompassed within the universal service and about 58.3% is bulk mail.

96.6% of distributed items had a destination within the national market, while the remaining 3.4% were dispatched to destinations in other countries. About 79.7% of postal traffic was comprised of correspondence, 9.2% direct mail and 7.1% editorial mail. Parcels made up 4.4% of total reported traffic.

Grupo CTT reported a market share of 94.7% of total postal traffic. In the express segment, the alternative providers had more significant market shares, and their combined market share exceeded CTT's share of 27.8%. There are 6 providers (Chronopost, Urbanos, Grupo Rangel, General Logistics Systems, DHL and Grupo SEUR) with individual shares of express mail traffic above 5%.

In the 1st quarter, revenues from postal services totalled 184 million euros. Of this amount, approximately 40.7% is derived from express mail.

As at the end of late March, there were 14.4 thousand people employed in the operation of postal services.  The trend in the number of people employed in the sector has been declining, although the reduction in employment lags the reduction of traffic occurring over the same period.
