Cable television networks have 830 000 subscribers

Data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP) reveals that by the end of June 2000, cable television operators had 830 000 subscribers, representing 24% growth compared to June 1999 and corresponding to 302 000 new subscribers.

Confirming the trend of previous quarters, the Portugal's Centre Region continued to have the highest subscriber growth rate: a 42% increase in the number of subscribers between June 1999 and June 2000. Nonetheless the region with the highest number of cable television subscribers was Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, with 59% of all clients.

By the end of the first half of 2000, 58% of national households were connected to cable television networks, with 20% of all households subscribing to the service.

In absolute numbers, there were approximately 2.42 homes passed by the end of June 2000, 14% higher than the second quarter of 1999, and 4% higher than the first quarter of 2000.

Around 94% of households in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region were connected to cable networks, followed by the Autonomous Regions of Azores and Maderia where the penetration rate in June was 41%.
