Penetration rate of main telephone accesses reaches record level

At the end of the 2nd quarter 2014 (2Q14) the penetration rate of main telephone accesses in Portugal was reported at 43.6 per 100 inhabitants, the highest level ever recorded by ANACOM.

In this period, there were 4.5 million main telephone accesses in Portugal (an increase of 0.3 percent over the previous quarter and also over 2nd quarter 2013). Accesses using alternative networks other than the traditional network represented 45.1 percent of main telephone accesses in 2Q14, an increase of 1.3 percentage points compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 4.3 percentage points compared to 2Q13.

Grupo PT holds the majority of main access lines with 55.5 percent (0.4 percentage points less than reported in the first quarter), followed by Grupo NOS with 30.4 percent (also 0.4 percentage points less than reported in the first quarter). Vodafone was the provider with the highest growth in the period being reported, with a market share of 8.1 percent (increasing 0.8 percentage points compared to the first quarter).

Total traffic originating on the fixed network during the 2Q14 comprised 1.8 billion minutes and 471 million calls. Compared to the same quarter of 2013, the volume of voice minutes on the fixed telephone service (FTS) decreased by 8.5 percent, with a general reduction reported in all traffic types.

During the quarter, on average per month, each main access accounted for 112 minutes in fixed-fixed calls (6 minutes less than in the previous quarter), 12 minutes in fixed-mobile calls and 8 minutes in international calls. The decline in on-net traffic may be associated with the increased penetration of bundles which include the fixed and mobile services.

Grupo PT's share of voice traffic in minutes was reported at 50.9 percent, 1 percentage point less than in the previous quarter and 1.9 percentage points less than in the same period of 2013. Grupo NOS reported the second largest share with 34.6 percent (unchanged from the previous quarter and declining by 0.1 percent compared to 2Q13), followed by Vodafone with 8.7 percent (increasing 1.2 percentage points over the previous quarter and 2.5 percentage points over 2Q13).
