Change of fixed operator: consumers may choose between two services

/ Updated on 23.01.2002

Telecommunications services clients that change their direct access operator for the Fixed Telephone Service, and are thus obliged to change their telephone number, may now choose between two services enabling them to continue to be contacted by those unaware of the new telephone number. The first option is the provision of a message stating the new number, whenever a call is routed to the old number. The second option is re-routing of calls to the new number, whenever calls are made to the old number. The first service is automatic and free-of-charge, whereas the latter service will be subject to a fee.

Both services will at least be available until the introduction of operator portability. Portability will enable users to maintain their telephone number when they switch their direct access operator and will enter into force in the fixed telephone network by June 30, 2001 at the latest.

Direct access to the Fixed Telephone Service is identical to the access provided, on an exclusive basis, by Portugal Telecom until the end of 1999. It corresponds to a contractual agreement for a service and the consequent installation of equipment in the customer's residence.
