Parcels make up 4.6 percent of total postal traffic in Portugal, the highest level on record


In the second quarter of 2014 (2Q14), total traffic from postal services in Portugal declined by 7.3 percent compared to the first quarter of 2014 (1Q14) and by 3.8 percent compared to the second quarter of 2013. On average, 20.6 postal items were sent per inhabitant, the lowest level on record.

Traffic encompassed within the universal service (declining 6.3 percent versus 1Q14 and 1.3 percent versus 2Q13) made up approximately 90.1 percent of total postal traffic, with 47.1 percent of traffic comprising bulk mail.

Meanwhile, 96.2 percent of distributed items had a destination within the national Portuguese market, while the remaining 3.8 percent were dispatched to destinations in other countries. About 80 percent of postal traffic comprised correspondence, 7.8 percent comprised direct mail and 7.5 percent editorial mail. Postal parcels represented 4.6 percent of total traffic, the highest level recorded to date and the only postal item category to see an increase in traffic (5.6 percent from the previous quarter and 7.2 percent compared to 2Q13).

Grupo CTT reported a market share of 94.5 percent of total postal traffic.

In 2Q14, total revenues derived from postal services totalled approximately 171.4 million euros (-1.2 percent versus 1Q14 and -2.4 percent compared to 2Q13). Postal parcels were the only item to report revenue growth (increasing 1.9 percent versus 1Q14 and increasing 4.4 percent versus 2Q13). Average revenue per item increased by 6.6 percent over the previous quarter and by 1.5 percent versus 2Q13.

At the end of the quarter, there were 12.9 thousand access points and 14.8 people employed in the operation of postal services.
