Mobile networks close to 7 million clients

At the end of the first quarter of 2001, Portugal had over 6.9 million Land Mobile Service (LMS) subscribers - only 41,000 subscribers short of the 7 million mark, reveals data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP).

300,000 new subscribers adhered to the service in the first quarter of 2001. In the last 12 months, over 2 million new subscribers adhered to the service. The penetration rate at the end of the first quarter of 2001 - 69.6 subscribers per 100 inhabitants, positions Portugal in 9th place in the European Union, remaining above the Community average (67,1%).

Conversation time also grew by 5% in the same period, rising to over 2,400 million minutes. The average duration time of calls was 93 seconds, with an average of 3 calls per day per subscriber.

The opposite growth trend was recorded in the Trunking Mobile Service (TMS) and the Paging Service (PS) which in the first three months of 2001 lost over 400 and 5,500 subscribers, respectively. In the last 12 months, there has been an 11% decrease in TMS business and a 53% fall in Paging Services.
