Cable television operators in activity in Portugal had 925,000 subscribers at the end of 2000, a 22% increase on the end of 1999. This increase corresponds to 164,000 new subscribers, reveals data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP). Between the third and fourth quarters of 2000, 63,000 new subscribers joined the service, the equivalent to a 7% increase.
The highest subscriber growth rate, during the last year, was observed in the Centre Region. There, the number of clients increased 35% over the year and 17% in the fourth quarter - the equivalent to 23,000 and 13,000 new subscribers, respectively.
At the end of 2000, 63% of the registered Portuguese houses were passed by cable. At the same time, 22% of the houses subscribed to the cable television service.
The highest level of subscriber penetration rate was seen in the Azores and Madeira Islands - 44% of all homes subscribed to the service.
The cable television operators in activity in Portugal, at the end of 2000, were Bragatel, Cabovisão, Pluricanal and TV Cabo.
