Land Mobile Service reaches 6.7 million clients

At the end of 2000, Portugal had around 6.7 million Land Mobile Service (LMS) subscribers clients, according to data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP). This represents a 15.5% growth between the third and fourth quarters, and an absolute increase of almost 900,000 new clients. Almost 2 million new subscribers adhered to the service in 2000.

Total conversation time for the year was over 8,000,000,000 minutes, a 69% increase on the total recorded in 1999. The number of calls made increased by 37%, corresponding to 5,500,000,000 calls made during 2000.

During this period, each Land Mobile Service subscriber made an average of 2.2 calls per day, corresponding to an average daily conversation time of 4 minutes per subscriber.

As a result of subscriber growth in 2000, the penetration rate of the service in Portugal rose to 67 subscribers per 100 inhabitants, standing above the European average of 62.6 subscribers per 100 inhabitants.
