The cable television distribution service at the end of the first quarter of 2001, had 977,000 subscribers, corresponding to 23% annual growth and 6% growth on the previous quarter. In absolute terms, this corresponds to the adhesion of around 183,000 and 52,000 new subscribers, respectively.
The data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP), indicates that the highest level of subscriber growth was in the North Region, with operators recording 20,000 new subscribers in the first three months of this year.
In terms of breakdown of subscribers by region, the highest proportion of national subscribers is in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley, with 53% of the total.
In the first quarter of 2001, 56% of all family households were cabled, based on INE estimates for 1999, i.e. 2,693,000 households, and 20% of all households were effectively connected to the cable television service. The growth rate of cabled homes in the first quarter of 2001 was around 4%.
The Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira continue to have the highest penetration rate of the cable television service. In the two island regions, 68% of households are cabled and 41% of households are effectively connected to the service.
NOTE: Until the end of 2000, published penetration rates were calculated on the basis of the total number of classic family households, in accordance with INE's definitive 1991 Census. From 2001, and until the results of the 2001 Census are known, data will be considered on the basis of INE's estimates of classic family households for 1999.
