Specifications for operator portability approved

/ Updated on 23.01.2002

The specifications for number portability among operators were approved by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP) in the 28th of June 2001. These specifications bring to an end a process that began with a public consultation during 2000, and that has been followed by various work groups set up between ICP and service providers.

Portability consists in being able to keep your telephone number when switching fixed network operator or in ISDN cases. It thus makes it possible to stimulate competition in the market, eliminating one obstacle to the operator change.

These specifications translate into a series of obligations for service providers, put forward as portability principles. They are also reflected in technical specifications regarding network interface, as well as specifications for administrative processes, including rules for relations among service providers, and between these and the Reference Entity for portability. Users are thus guaranteed the availability of this functionality.
