Mobile networks have 7.2 million customers

At the end of the second quarter of 2001, Portugal had 7.2 million Land Mobile Service (LMS) subscribers, reveals data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP). In the last 12 months, 2 million new subscribers adhered to the service. The service penetration rate in Portugal thus remains above the EU average.

This number of subscribers represents a growth of 3.5% on the previous quarter, corresponding to 245,000 new customers that have adhered to the service, and 38.7% growth on the second quarter of 2000.

Conversation time in the three GSM operators grew by 10% in the second quarter of 2001, rising to over 2,500 million minutes. The average duration time of calls was 87 seconds.

In the same period, 1,700 million calls were made, 8% higher than the previous quarter. This corresponds to an average of slightly below 3 calls per day per subscriber.

The service penetration rate in Portugal maintained above the European Union average in the period in analysis: 71.9% in Portugal compared to 69.4% in the EU. Portugal's service penetration rate at June 2001 was higher than that in Germany, Belgium, Spain, France, Greece and Ireland.
