New ICP statutes published today

/ Updated on 24.01.2008

The new sattutes of the Portuguese communications' regulator were published in the Diário da República today and will come into effect during the second week of January. The Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal will come to be known as ICP - Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações, or ICP-ANACOM for short.

Through Decree-Law no. 309/2001, ICP's statutes now enshrine several functions that had already been entrusted to the Institute in practice and its powers are also increased. Its independence is underscored and the organic working of its management is altered. The term of office will be a non-renewable five-year period, and management is subject to a specific regime of incompatibilities.

As the communications' regulator (telecommunications and post), ICP-ANACOM will regulate, supervise and represent the industry and will have additional responsibilities in fostering consumer defence and in the application of the rules of competition in the postal and telecommunications market, in co-ordination with other entities with responsibilities in this field.
