ANACOM seeks to hear market on the use to be given to available spectrum

Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM) has launched a public consultation to hear the market on the use to be given to spectrum available in the 3.4-3.8 GHz frequency band; this spectrum is apt for use by high-speed wireless broadband networks, supporting the provision of innovative electronic communications services.

The opinions proffered by the various stakeholders (manufacturers, operators, private and public entities, users, etc.), including as regards the applications and services that might be implemented, will then be considered by ANACOM in a decision on making the spectrum available and how to allocate it.

ANACOM also intends to consult the market about the possibility and means of altering the framework governing the 3.4-3.8 GHz band, to allow accommodation of multiple technologies, including LTE, for wireless broadband access.

The spectrum that is available in the 3.4-3.8GHz frequency includes spectrum remaining from the BWA auction held in 2009, spectrum resulting from the revocation of rights of use of frequencies held by ONITELECOM and SONAECOM, and also spectrum that was allocated to PTC (now MEO) and which became available following the FWA refarming process.

Contributions to the public consultation may be submitted until 25 May 2015; the public consultation document is available on ANACOM's website (www.anacom.pthttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?categoryId=2958).
