WG NaN PT FNI meeting - Limassol

The 26th meeting of the project team on Future Numbering Issues (PT FNI) of the ECC working group on Numbering and Networks (WG NaN) met last 19-20 May in Limassol, Cyprus, where the participating regulators discussed the latest information regarding numbering. The topics examined included eventual impacts associated to eCall and over-the-top (OTT) services, namely regarding the use of mobile network codes (MNCs).

A contribution was therefore drawn up for presentation at the next meeting of study group 2 (SG2) of the International Telecommunication Union Standardisation Sector (ITU-T), to be held in October 2015. It proposes several changes to ITU-T Recommendation E.212 (international identification plan for public networks and subscriptions) with a view to making the MNC award criteria more flexible, on the assurance that such resources are not exhausted.

Bearing in mind the content of ECC Report 194 on extra-territorial use of E.164 numbers, the participants in this gathering also examined the situation of ‘extra-territorial’ use of (national) numbers in the scope of ITU-T Recommendation E.164 (international public telecommunication numbering plan) in an attempt to harmonise general principles for awarding such resources.

The next meeting will be held in September 2015 in Lisbon.
