Internet of Things European Summit - Brussels

Fátima Barros took part last 11 May as BEREC chair in 2015 in the European Summit on the Internet of Things. This Brussels event was attended by more than 200 delegates, including key European decision makers as well as stakeholders. Among other issues, they examined the current ecosystem of the internet of things and various opportunities and challenges faced by different industries.

In her speech the BEREC chair highlighted the importance of the internet of things in the European economy, calling attention to a number of challenges for regulation such as roaming, the shortage of resources (availability of numbers and spectrum), security and data protection, and the need for standardisation in the ecosystem of the internet of things. The chair also indicated that BEREC was working closely with the European Commission (EC) to identify key regulatory problems that should be taken into account when reviewing the regulatory framework for electronic communications and that the national regulatory authorities (NRAs) are focused on finding solutions instead of raising obstacles, so they can adopt an approach that is as far as possible more efficient and proportional and less intrusive.
