Data on the fourth quarter of 1999 show that at the end of last year cable television operators had 760,000 subscribers to this service. This figure represents an annual growth of 28 per cent, equivalent to 164 thousand new clients. The growth rates in the number of subscribers were higher in the Central region, as can be seen in the table below.

At the end of 1999, cable television networks reached 54 per cent of Portuguese homes. On the 31st of December, 18 per cent of all accommodations were linked to the service.
The Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region showed the highest penetration rate of cabled houses: 87% of all accommodations in this region are equipped to receive this service. However, with regard to the number of subscribers, the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores show the highest penetration rate, at circa 39%.

In absolute numbers, approximately 2.25 million accommodations were cabled in Portugal at the end of 1999, showing a 24% growth in relation to the number registered the previous year, and a 3% growth in the last three months. In absolute terms, these growths correspond to 432 and 66 thousand newly cabled houses, respectively. As was the case in previous quarters, the Central region shows the highest growth rates in relation to the other regions, be it over the last twelve months (52 per cent), or the last quarter (seven per cent).
In relation to the total number, the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region has the highest number of cabled houses, with circa 55 per cent, followed by the Northern region with 24 per cent.
