Portuguese schoolgirl awarded special mention by UPU in international competition


A letter written by a young Portuguese student, Maria Coutinho, has been given international distinction by the Universal Postal Union (UPU) with a special mention, after it won the national "Best Letter" competition, a joint initiative of ANACOM and CTT- Correios de Portugal.

The distinguished letter written by Maria Coutinho (aged 13), who lives in Porto, begins with the word "Dear book of worn pages".

This year, the UPU letter-writing competition saw participation from 65 countries, representing the involvement of about 1.5 million children and young people.

The winner of the UPU competition was Sara Jadid (aged 13) from Lebanon, whose letter made a heartfelt plea for a world without war. Second place in the competition was given to Miriam Acin (aged 11) and third place to Leonardo Silva Brito (aged 15).
