At the end of 2nd quarter of 2015 (2Q15), there were 3.43 million subscribers to the subscription television service (TVS) in Portugal - an increase of 1.1% from the previous quarter and an increase of 5.6% over the same period of 2014. The growth reported in the service was mainly due to offers based on optical fibre (FTTH/B), with the number of subscribers increasing by 6.6% over the previous quarter and by 30.1% over the same period of 2014.
In technology terms, the cable TV distribution service was used by 39.5% of total subscribers, and xDSL by 22%. Meanwhile, optical fibre (FTTH/B) accounted for 20.8% of all subscribers, and is the technology that has seen most growth, followed by satellite (DTH), which was used for 17.7% of total subscribers.
The large majority of TVS subscribers chose to acquire the service as part of a bundle, and as at the end of 2Q15, there were 2.95 million TVS subscribers who had acquired the service using this option - an increase of 2.6% over the previous quarter and an increase of 12.9% compared to 2Q14. Grupo Altice reported the largest share of TVS subscribers (47.1%), followed by the Grupo NOS and Vodafone with shares of 43.7% and 9%, respectively.
In terms of turnover, the data reported for 2Q15 indicates that total revenues for the TVS service (stand-alone and bundles that comprise this service) totalled 821 million euros, with triple/quadruple/quintuple-play bundles providing the main drivers of revenue growth.
Meanwhile, at the end of the 2Q15, around 17% of homes with STV had access to premium channels (a decrease of 0.9 percentage points from the previous quarter), while 70.8% had more than 80 channels (a year-on-year increase of 9.2 percentage points. Use of the different features of the STV service continues to increase, and in 2Q15, about 68% of subscribers used at least one of the features available, with automatic recording the most used service.
