ANACOM has released its latest report on the network of postal establishments belonging to CTT - Correios de Portugal, S.A. (CTT), concessionaire company of the universal postal service, and to other undertakings providing services conceded to CTT, as at the end of 2014.
According to the report, at the end of 2014, there were 2,317 postal establishments in operation in Portugal, including 619 permanent post offices, 4 mobile post offices and 1,694 postal agencies.
Overall, a reduction was reported in the total number of postal establishments (126) versus the end of 2013. Nevertheless, the total number of postal establishments at the end of 2014 is in line with the objectives of postal network density and minimum offers of service established by ANACOM Determinationhttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1334341, which implicitly required CTT to maintain a minimum of 2,296 postal establishments in operation from 4th quarter 2014 until the end of September 2017.
At the end of 2014, CTT accomplished the objectives of postal network density and minimum services established by ANACOM, except as regards postal establishments with reduced opening hours in each municipality. According to the objectives set, the number of postal establishments which are open to the public for less than 5 working days and/or 15 hours per week may not exceed 20% of postal establishments in each municipality. This value exceeded 20% in four municipalities.
Provision of the full range of concession services was assured, during the period being reported, by at least one postal establishment in all 308 municipalities. For the first time since 2003, a slight increase was reported in the total number of geographical points at which post boxes are sited.
Internationally, Portugal compares favourably with the European Union (EU) average, in terms of average area and average number of inhabitants per postal establishment, according to data available on the network of permanent postal establishments of the universal service providers in EU Member States (data from the Universal Postal Union with reference to 2013). The proportion of postal establishments which are managed by third parties in Portugal is above the EU average.
