At the end of September 1999, data compiled by ICP showed that cable television networks were available to 53% of homes in Portugal. In the same month, 17% of homes were effectively cabled. During the same period, the total number of subscribers totalled 712 thousand.
The Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region represents the highest penetration rate in terms of cabled houses: 85% of accommodations in this region were prepared to receive the cable television service. Even so, the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira lead in terms of penetration rate: in September, 37% of houses received service.

At the end of September, and in absolute figures, approximately 2.2 million homes were cabled. This represents a growth of 24%, when compared with the same period last year, the equivalent of 427 thousand newly cabled houses.
The Central Region has the highest growth rate: 62% between September 1999 and September 1998. This percentage is equivalent to, in absolute figures, 88 thousand cabled houses.
Even so, the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region has the highest percentage of cabled houses in Portugal. More than half (55%) of the homes ready to receive the service were in Lisbon, followed by the Northern Region with 24% of the total.

At the end of the period referred to, the cable television service reached 712 thousand subscribers, equivalent to a 30% growth in annual homologous terms.
The Central Region had the highest growth rate with a 63% increase in the number of subscribers between September 1998 and September 1999.
However, once again, the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region has the highest number of subscribers: 59% of all subscribers in Portugal were residing in this region. The Northern Region alone held 20% of the subscriptions.
