27th meeting of WG NaN PT FNI - Lisbon

Lisbon hosted last 15-16 September the 27th meeting of the project team on Future Numbering Issues (PT FNI) of the ECC working group on Numbering and Networks (WG NaN). The participants discussed the latest information about numbering, such as the proposal to amend Recommendation E.212 (international identification plan for public networks and subscriptions) of the International Telecommunication Union Standardisation Sector (ITU-T), extraterritorial number use in the scope of Recommendation E.164 (international public telecommunication numbering plan) and analysis of potential impacts of e-call and machine-to-machine on numbering.

To that end, the contribution to present at the October 2015 meeting of ITU-T study group 2 (SG 2) was finished. That gathering will examine the proposed amendment of ITU-T Recommendation E.212 with a view to making mobile network code (MNC) allocation criteria more flexible, on assurance that such resources are not exhaustible. Bearing in mind the content of ECC Report 194 on “Extraterritorial Use of E.164 Numbers”, the participants also analysed some situations regarding numbers covered by that ITU-T recommendation. The aim was to harmonise and determine general principles for allocating and using those resources and also to ensure compliance with conditions associated to the use of national numbers.

The next meeting of this team will be held in January 2016.
