European Commission launches consultation on fixed and mobile termination rates

On 11 March 2016, the European Commission (EC) launched a public consultation on fixed and mobile termination rates. The consultation closes on 7 June 2016.

As part of the Digital Single Market strategy, the EC launched the consultation seeking to evaluate the impact of the Termination Rates Recommendationhttp://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2009:124:0067:0074:EN:PDF of 2009 on termination markets and on the European Union single market. The Commission also aims to assess whether the current regulatory approach on termination rates should be maintained or amended to reflect technological developments in the markets concerned.

The regulation of fixed and mobile termination rates plays an important role in providing competitive telecommunications services to European consumers. Termination rates are the costs that electronic communications operators charge each other for the delivery of calls between networks. These costs are ultimately included in the price of calls charged to consumers and businesses.

National regulators, public authorities, telecommunications operators, consultancies, civil society organisations, academics and all interested citizens are invited to respond to the questionnairehttps://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/TerminationRatesRecommendationEvaluationQuestionnaire2015 by the closing date.
