World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2016

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is celebrated annually on 17 May, this year under the theme "ICT entrepreneurship for social impact", as defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

By focusing on this theme, the ITU aims to highlight the potential of entrepreneurs, start-ups and small and medium enterprises providing services in the area of information and communication technologies to create innovative solutions with lasting impact on national, regional and global economies.

In Portugal, the official celebrations are taking place at FPC - Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações (Portuguese Communications Foundation). In addition to an institutional session, there are planned visits to the exhibitions: "8 artists" - Fundação PT Contemporary Art Collection, "The submarine cable in a sea of connectivity" (phase II) and "Feel the Photography" (ACIS - Associação das Comunicações - Instituto Sénior). There are also plans for a special activity for schools.

The event will be attended by Fátima Barros, Chair of ANACOM's Board of Directors and of the Management Board of FPC, and by Pedro Marques, Portugal’s Minister of Planning and Infrastructure.

Participants in the WTISD celebrations are also invited to visit ANACOM's revamped space at FPC, which offers visitors a self-explanatory means of finding out about ANACOM and its work.

The conference "Digital Strategy and Creative Industries", organised as part of the post-graduation in strategic digital communications of Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas (School of Social and Political Sciences), University of Lisbon, also sets out to mark this anniversary. The objective of this conference is to contribute to digital literacy and to expand discussions on tools for production, interaction and communication, information and knowledge, creativity and entrepreneurship.
