Fixed service penetration rate in Portugal continues to increase

At the end of the 1st quarter of 2016 (1Q16) the penetration rate of main telephone accesses in Portugal was reported at the highest level since ANACOM started compiling this information, rising to a rate of 45.5 accesses per 100 inhabitants. The number of accesses rose to 4.72 million, increasing by 0.8% versus the previous quarter and by 2.6% compared to 1st quarter 2015.

This growth was due to an increase in the number of accesses supported over optical fibre and cable TV networks (88.7 thousand accesses).

However, in the period being reported, the number of voice minutes on the fixed telephone service decreased 0.9% compared to 4th quarter 2015 and by 12.9% compared to 1st quarter 2015, while remaining within the forecast range resulting from the estimated trend and seasonal effects.

Each main access consumed an average of 85 minutes per month in fixed-fixed calls (1 minute fewer than in the previous quarter), 9 minutes in fixed-mobile calls (in line with the previous quarter) and 7 minutes in international calls (1 minute fewer than in the previous quarter).

In the period being reported, MEO was responsible for 49% of all main accesses (-1.1 percentage points versus the previous quarter). Grupo NOS was the 2nd largest provider with a market share of 33.5% (+0.7 percentage points) and was the operator to report most growth this period. Vodafone achieved a share of 13% (+0.6 percentage points).

There were about 21 thousand public pay-telephones reported in the period (1.8% fewer than in the previous quarter and 5.5% fewer versus 1Q15).
