Optical fibre offerings drive increase in number subscription TV customers


There were 3.6 million subscribers to the subscription television service in Portugal at the end of 2nd quarter 2016 - increasing by 36 thousand (1%) from the previous quarter and by 160 thousand (+4.7%) compared to the same period of 2015. The growth in the service was mainly due to offers based on optical fibre (FTTH/B), where the number of subscribers increased by 56 thousand over the previous quarter and by 205 thousand from a year earlier.

In this period, about 18.1% of homes with the subscription TV service had access to premium channels (an increase of 1.1 percentage points year-on-year), while 77.5% had more than 80 channels (an increase of 6.7 percentage points year-on-year).

Use of the features of the subscription TV service declined by 1 percentage point over the quarter, with about 71% of subscribers reported as using at least one of the features available.  Automatic recordings were the most commonly used service, followed by the TV programme guide, channels in high definition and manual recordings.

About 3.4% of individuals aged 10 years or over had subscribed to streaming-on-demand services (Netflix, Fox Play and Nplay).

At the end of June, 88.8% of subscription television service subscribers received their service as part of a bundle. The number of subscribers with the service included within a bundle increased by 1.6% over the previous quarter.

In technological terms, the cable network remains the main support technology of the subscription TV service, used by 37.3% of total subscribers, followed by optical fibre (FTTH/B), used by 25.7% subscribers. xDSL and DTH were used by 20.2% and 16.8% of subscribers, respectively.

Grupo NOS reported the largest share of subscription TV subscribers in the 2nd quarter (43.7%), followed by MEO, Vodafone and Cabovisão with shares of 39.7%, 11.7% and 4.8%, respectively. In net terms, Vodafone was the provider that added the largest number of subscribers in the quarter.

Total revenues from the subscription television service (stand-alone and bundles that include this service) were reported at 895 million euros up to the quarter being reported (increasing 9.2 percent in relation to the same period of 2015).
