At the end of 3rd quarter 2016 (3Q16), the penetration rate in main telephone accesses in Portugal reached 46 accesses per 100 inhabitants, the highest level since data on these statistics was first compiled (4th quarter 2006).
The total stock of main telephone accesses was reported at 4.76 million accesses (an increase of 0.6% over 2Q16 and an increase of 2.3% compared to 3Q15). The growth reported this quarter (an increase of 29 thousand equivalent accesses) was due to an increase in VoIP/VoB accesses (increasing by 81 thousand accesses); these include accesses supported over optical fibre and cable TV networks.
There were about 21 thousand public pay-telephones reported in the period (1.3 percent fewer than in the previous quarter and 5.2 percent fewer versus 3Q15).
At the end of the period, MEO was responsible for 47.4% of all main accesses (-0.8 percentage points). Grupo NOS was the 2nd largest provider with a share of 34.2% (+0.4 percentage points) and was the provider that saw the most growth this quarter. Vodafone reported a share of 14% (+0.5 percentage points).
The volume of fixed telephone service voice minutes decreased by 7.8% compared to 2nd quarter 2016 and by 11.4% compared to 3rd quarter 2015.
On average, 96 minutes were consumed per access per month: 75 minutes per month were consumed per main access in fixed-fixed calls (9 minutes fewer than in the previous quarter), 9 minutes in fixed-mobile calls (in line with the previous quarter) and 6 minutes in international calls (1 minute fewer than in the previous quarter). For the first time since this data was first compiled, average traffic per access has fallen below 100 minutes per month.
