ITU Telecom World 2016 - Bangkok


The ITU Telecom World event organised by the ITU took place on 14-17 November in Bangkok, Thailand.

ANACOM was represented by Fátima Barros as chair of ANACOM and vice-chair of BEREC. She took part in different panels and also in the Leadership Summit.

The discussions at that summit of leaders were very enriching, given the different challenges regarding connectivity in various regions of the planet. Also dealt with were questions involving cyber-security and its role in societies’ full enjoyment of information and communication technologies.

Other participants in the Leadership Summit included ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong; Internet Society President and CEO Kathy Brown, Thai Operators Association President Suphachai Chearavanont, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi and Indian State Minister Manoj Sinha.

Fátima Barros also attended the Forum on the ‘Asia-Pacific Exchange on Broadband Regulation and Policy: opportunities and challenges in driving the digital economy’, jointly organised by the ITU and Huawei. On this occasion it was possible to discuss and compare regulatory approaches to promoting broadband in Europe and Asia. Barros presented the state of the art regarding development of next generation networks in Portugal as well as the regulatory measures that have been promoting that development.

Note that the Association of Communication and Telecommunications Regulators from the Community of Portuguese Language Countries also took part in one of the panels, on ‘Top-down versus Bottom-up Innovation: fostering future tech entrepreneurship’.

Lastly, other highlights included different bilateral meetings held with regulatory authorities from various countries.
