Subscription TV adds 159 thousand customers in one year


The subscription television signal distribution service had over 3.6 million subscribers at the end of 3rd quarter 2016, adding 159 thousand new customers over the space of a year.

The growth in the service was mainly due to offers based on optical fibre, with an increase of 220 thousand subscribers over this period. Even so, cable remains the principal platform for subscription TV, representing 36.8% of total subscribers.

Analysing provider shares of subscribers, Grupo NOS reported a 43.5% share of subscribers, followed by MEO (39.4%), Vodafone (12.2%) and Cabovisão (4.7%). In net terms, Vodafone was the provider that added the largest number of subscribers in the 3rd quarter.

As at the end of September, about 16.2% of homes with the subscription TV service had access to premium channels (an increase of 0.7 percentage points year-on-year), while 78.7% had more than 80 channels (an increase of 6.7 percentage points year-on-year).

About 72% of users used at least one of the service's features: Automatic recordings were the most commonly used service, followed by the TV programme guide, channels in high definition and manual recordings.

In the 3rd quarter, about 3.2% of individuals aged 10 years or over subscribed to streaming-on-demand services (Netflix, Fox Play and Nplay).

Meanwhile, 89.3% of subscribers to the subscription television signal distribution service received the service as part of a bundle (3.25 million users).

Total revenues from the subscription TV distribution service (stand-alone and bundles which include this service) were reported at 1.342 billion euros (increasing 8.6% from the same period of 2015.
