CTT postal network and supply of services - 3rd quarter 2016

The report1 on the postal network and supply of services by CTT - Correios de Portugal (CTT), the universal postal service concessionaire in Portugal, is now available.

This report, with data on the 3rd quarter of 2016 (3Q2016), states that, at the end of this period, there were 2,329 functioning postal establishments, including 613 fixed post offices, 3 mobile post offices and 1,713 sub-post service offices.

The total number of postal establishments has remained broadly unchanged since the end of the 4th quarter 2014 (4Q2014) and in line with the targets of postal network density and minimum services established by ANACOM decision of 28 August 2014https://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1334341 (under base XV of the Bases of the Universal Postal Service Concession, republished in annex to Decree-Law 160/2013 of 19 November), which implicitly established that CTT must maintain 2,296 postal establishments in operation from 4Q2014 (inclusive) until the end of September 2017.

Based on information reported by CTT, the targets of postal network density and minimum services were met by this operator in 3Q2016.

At international level, the situation in Portugal slightly lags behind the European Union (EU) average (excluding Portugal), in terms of both coverage and density, based on data provided by the Universal Postal Union on the network of fixed postal establishments of the universal service providers in EU Member States, with reference to 2014. In Portugal, the percentage of postal establishments managed by third parties is higher than the EU average, although the EU average is moving closer to the Portuguese level.
