Secretary-General of the ITU makes official visit to Portugal


The Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - Houlin Zhao - started an official visit to Portugal on 24 January. The visit ended on 25 January with an audience with the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

On his visit to Portugal the Secretary-General of the ITU met with the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor; with the Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Guilherme d´Oliveira Martins, with ANACOM, with the main Portuguese telecommunications operators and with other organisations of the national information and communication technology sector.

These meetings were intended to provide opportunities to state the main challenges and concerns facing this sector nationally, as well as to identify possible relevant issues for Portugal that might be addressed by the ITU.

The official programme also included a visit to the exhibition “The submarine cable in a sea of connectivity”, on display at Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações (Portuguese Communications Foundation) and promoted by ANACOM.
