Seminar on ''The Role of the Judiciary in the Changing Digital Single Market'' - Brussels

Brussels hosted last 20 January a seminar organised by the European Commission (EC) on “The Role of the Judiciary in the Changing Digital Single Market”. Besides the EC, the participants included regulators and judges from the member states, among them three Portuguese judges, namely from the Court of Appeal, the Central Administrative Court (South) and the Supreme Court of Justice.

The session began with a Portuguese judge’s presentation regarding a decision by Portugal’s Court of Competition, Regulation and Supervision regarding non-payment by electronic communications operators of compensation in the event of failing to respect the deadline for sending documents among operators involved in portability processes (envisaged in the regulation on number portability).

Also noteworthy was the presentation on BEREC’s role in the procedure for notification of markets and remedies, envisaged in articles 7 and 7a of the Framework Directive, as well as the presentation by Professor Steffen Hoernig of Lisbon’s Universidade Nova, on “Trends in Electronic Communications: economic and regulatory problems”.
