Subscription TV in Portugal grows 3.5%, driven by optical fibre


In second quarter 2017 (2Q2017), there were 3.72 million subscribers of the subscription television signal distribution service (STVS) in Portugal, representing an increase of 0.7% over the previous quarter (an additional 27 thousand customers) and an increase of 3.5% over the same period of 2016 (+(126 thousand customers). Growth in the service was mainly due to growth in optical fibre offers (FTTH/B); the number of optical fibre subscribers increased by 62 thousand (+5.5%) compared to the previous quarter and by 262 thousand (+28.3%) compared to the same period of 2016.

In terms of technology, cable accesses continue to lead subscriber preferences, with 36.4%, followed closely by FTTH/B (31.9%), then xDSL (16.6%) and DTH (15.2%).

It is estimated that around 92.1% of subscribers received the service as part of a bundle of services - the number of subscribers subscribing to the service as part of a bundle increased by 2.1% over the previous quarter and by 7.5% when compared to the same quarter of 2016.

Grupo NOS reported the largest share of subscribers (43.3%), followed by MEO (38.3%), Vodafone (13.5%) and NOWO (4.7%). Vodafone was the provider that gained the largest number of subscribers in net terms, during the second quarter.

Total revenues from STVS (stand-alone and bundles including this service) were reported at around 942 million euros to the end of second quarter 2017 (+5.2% in relation to the same period of 2016).

At the end of June, approximately 14.3% of households with the STV signal distribution service had access to premium channels (a decrease of 3.8 percentage points over the same period), while 76.1% had more than 100 channels (an increase of 7.1 percentage points over the same period of 2016).

Usage of STVS features increased by 3.5 percentage points in the second quarter, with around 75% of subscribers making use of at least one of the available features. Automatic recording was the most commonly used feature, followed by the TW programme guide, high-definition channels and manual recording.

It should also be noted that, in 2Q2017, about 4.8% of individuals aged 10 years and over subscribed to streaming-on-demand services (e.g. Netflix, Fox Play, NPlay or Amazon Prime Video).
