Postal traffic falls by 6.7% in one year


Up to the end of the second quarter of 2017 (2Q2017), total traffic from postal services in Portugal decreased by 9.3% compared to the previous quarter, falling to 195.5 million items. This decline is less pronounced (-6.7%) versus the same quarter of 2016.

Postal traffic per capita fell to 19 items. About 84.3 percent of traffic was covered by the scope of the universal service.

Objects distributed to the national market made up 96 percent of the total, while the remaining 4 percent were distributed to other countries.  About 78.9 percent of postal traffic was made up of correspondence, 7.6 percent editorial mail and 8.6 percent direct mail. Postal parcels represented 4.9 percent of total traffic.

Grupo CTT reported a share of 92.4 percent of total postal traffic.

In 2Q2017, revenues from postal services totalled around 159 million euros, 1.1% less than in 2Q2016. Average revenue per item increased by 6.0% versus 2Q2016.

As regards human resources, at the end of June there were about 14,800 people employed in the operation of postal services. The number of staff increased by 0.4% compared to 2Q2016.

In terms of material resources, in 2Q2017, the number of access points increased by 0.5% versus 2Q2016. The number of distribution centres decreased by 0.7%, while the vehicles fleet saw no significant change.
