Postal network and offer of CTT service - 2nd quarter 2017

Report1 on the postal network and offer of services of CTT - Correios de Portugal (CTT), concessionaire of the universal postal service, is available, referring to the end of second quarter 2017 (2Q2017).

This report shows that, at the end of June 2017, 2,357 postal establishments were in operation, including 610 permanent post offices, 3 mobile post offices and 1,744 postal agencies.

The total number of postal establishments has remained stable since the end of fourth quarter 2014, in line with the objectives of the postal network density and minimum services established by ANACOM decision of 28 August 2014https://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=13343412, which implicitly requires CTT to maintain 2,296 postal establishments in operation from 4Q2014 (inclusive) until the end of September 20173.

Based solely on the information reported by CTT, the targets of postal network density and minimum offer of services were accomplished in 2Q2017.

Internationally, according to the data available from the Universal Postal Union (UPU) on the network of permanent postal establishments of the universal service providers in EU Member States (with reference to 2015), Portugal slightly lags the European Union (average excluding Portugal) in terms of coverage index and is in line with the European Union (average excluding Portugal) in terms of the national population density index.

In Portugal, the percentage of postal establishments managed by third parties is higher than the EU average.
