WG FM Drones meeting - September 2017

WG FM established a correspondence group called WG FM Drones, chaired by Austria, to prepare a report on systems ordinarily known as drones, specifically on technical and regulatory aspects of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and spectrum regulation needs.

The third meeting of WG FM Drones was held in Mainz, Germany, last 22 September, attended by 15 participants.

The main issues considered at the meeting were the proposed report on UAS and frequency bands for UAS.

All comments received in the scope of the public consultation approved at the 88th WG FM meeting (May 2017), concerning draft ECC Report 268 on “Technical and Regulatory Aspects and the Needs for Spectrum Regulation for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)”, were resolved. This proposed report includes elements on the new European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulation for UAS - NPA 2017-05(A) (Notice of Proposed Amendment) on Introduction of a regulatory framework for the operation of drones - Unmanned aircraft system operations in the open and specific category. Because this document was in public consultation until 15 September 2017 and the consultation’s results were therefore unknown at the date of the meeting, the draft ECC Report 268 resulting from the WG FM Drones meeting will be submitted to the next WG FM meeting only for the group’s consideration. The results of the proposed public consultation on the NPA will later be reflected in draft ECC Report 268.

The document with some considerations about possible frequency bands for UAS was updated and will be considered by WG FM.
