WiFi4EU - invitation to the municipal councils

The first call to present proposals to the WiFi4EU initiative, taking place in the first quarter of 2018, is addressed to municipalities and aims at providing open Internet access in areas of public interest and centres of local social life, including spaces open to the general public, such as parks, squares, schools, libraries etc.

The WiFi4EU initiative is a European Commission (EC) programme, approved by Regulation (EU) 2017/1953 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 Octoberhttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1421400; it seeks the promotion of Internet connectivity in local communities through the provision of financial support. This financing is intended to cover the Wi-Fi system's equipment and installation costs and will be allocated directly by the European Commission to municipal councils on a “first come, first served” basis using an electronic platform.

As such, all municipalities wishing to benefit from this financing should register on the registration platform as soon as it is made available by the Commission. The Commission will decide shortly on the date on which the process will start.

All information regarding this programme is available through the WiFi4EU initiative, and clarification sessions are also planned (to be announced and held nearer the time).

The European Commission has provided an email address (cnect-wifi4eu@ec.europa.eumailto:cnect-wifi4eu@ec.europa.eu) which can be used to address any queries about this initiative (in Portuguese).
