Workshop ''The future of the Mainland-Azores-Madeira interconnection by submarine cable''

The workshop "The future of the Mainland-Azores-Madeira interconnection by submarine cable" is taking place on 20 June 2018 at FPC - Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações (Portuguese Communications Foundation), in Lisbon. The workshop, which is organised by ANACOM, provides an opportunity for discussion on the future of this interconnection, given the current situation and experience in this area.

Since the current optical fibre interconnections between Mainland Portugal and Portugal’s Autonomous Regions (national branches of the ATLANTIS-2 and COLUMBUS-3 international submarine cables) reach the end of their useful life in 6 to 7 years, alternatives submarine cable solutions are needed to replace existing ones.

ANACOM considers analysis of this matter to be a priority, as a critical factor of territorial cohesion and external competitiveness and for the development of electronic communications in the country. ANACOM has organised the workshop for this reason, with participation by invited public and private entities identified as relevant for the definition of a national strategy in terms of the future Mainland, Azores and Madeira interconnection via submarine cable.

Proceedings will be opened by the Portuguese Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Guilherme W. d'Oliveira Martins.
