Internet access with 6.54 million accesses - third quarter 2003

The number of subscriptions to Internet access services reached 6.54 million at the end of the third quarter of this year, for a penetration rate of 62.8%. This figure corresponds to growth of 6.3% over the second quarter of the year and 38.6% over the same period last year, reveal data from the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM).

The dial-up access mode accounts for 93.5% of total subscriptions and grew by 5.8% from the second to the third quarter of the year.

Broadband, including accesses by cable and ADSL, accounted for the remaining 6.5%, thus reaching 423,000 customers, with a penetration rate of 4.1%. These figures indicate quarterly and annual customer growth of 14.5% and 123.2% respectively.

In the field of broadband access customers, data compiled by ANACOM conclude that most - 66.3% - access via cable networks. The remaining 33.7% access via ADSL technology.

Cable accesses reached 280,000 at the end of the third quarter of this year, 6.8% more than in the previous quarter. ADSL accesses reached 143,000 customers and grew by 33.4% from the second to the third quarter of the year.

At the end of September, 51 authorised entities were registered to provide Internet access service, of which only 26 were providing the service.

Regarding the inactive entities, 14 had yet to begin activity, while 11 were not providing the service as they had either ceased or suspended provision of same, though maintaining the respective registration.
