The number of residential customers of high-speed networks at a fixed location reached 2.7 million at the end of the first half of 2019 (1H19), up 12% over the first half of 2018. Alentejo, the Central region and the Autonomous Region of the Azores reported the most significant increases, rising 22%, 20.1% and 20.5%, respectively. Looking at residential customers per 100 households, 64.7% of households were subscribed to high-speed services at a fixed location at the end of 1H19 – 6.9% up on the same period of the previous year.
In terms of cabled households, it is estimated that around 5.2 million were cabled with a high-speed network at the end of 1H19, a 6.3% increase over the same period of the previous year. High-speed network coverage was 83%, 4.8% up on the first half of 2018.
Regarding the technologies used, it is estimated that Fibre to the Home (FTTH) cabled households amounted to around 4.8 million at the end of 1H19, an increase of 9.2% over the first half of 2018. In turn, high-speed accesses based on HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) cable TV networks increased by 0.5% over the past year, reaching 3.8 million cabled households.
Analysing coverage, FTTH reached 76.6% (national average) of classic family homes and establishments, a figure only surpassed in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (87.1%) and Lisbon Metropolitan Area (92.2%). The coverage of HFC cabled households was 59.5% (national average), with the highest values being reported in the Azores (71.7%) and in Lisbon.
