ANACOM opens new northern monitoring centre

On 24 October 2019, at 3:30 pm, at ANACOM's premises in Porto, the new northern spectrum monitoring and control centre (SMCC) will officially open.

The implementation of new approaches in ANACOM’s activities has led to the need for changes in layout and furniture, as well as new technical equipment solutions, as a result of which the renovation of this centre, created in 1995, sought to:

  • Reorganise spaces and work stations.
  • Modernise facilities and technical furniture.
  • Implement new technical solutions.

The solutions found today and implemented at this monitoring centre, namely the use of a visual display system consisting of displays and videowalls, offer significant improvements in various aspects, in particular the thermal and acoustic environment, visual, aesthetic and tactile comfort and the opportunity to share technical information between monitoring systems and overseas teams and/or other monitoring centres.

Thus, the new SMCC provides:

  • Better use of available area.
  • Extended flexibility, in view of the variations required with technological development.
  • A favourable environment for 24-hour shift work.
  • Reduced fatigue among employees when performing their tasks.

In operational terms, the changes implemented, which will extend to the remaining three centres (Ponta Delgada, Barcarena and Funchal), create conditions for the further development of engineering solutions adopted over the years, which have contributed decisively to the success of the successive implementation of new technologies.

These engineering solutions are also critical to ensuring that radiocommunications proceed smoothly, especially those related to search and rescue operations, the emergency and security services, State-run networks, the use of stations in events and also services provided to the wider population, such as mobile communications and digital terrestrial television (DTT).

With this investment, ANACOM has adopted state-of-the-art technologies, creating conditions that will ensure more and different supervisory, monitoring and spectrum remote control functions and other activities associated with the supervisory duties performed by this Authority.

The official opening of the Porto SMCC will be preceded by a ceremony for the signing of cooperation agreements, under the DTT, with municipal councils in the northern region of the country.
