Sixth and fifth meeting of the working group on the future of submarine cables for communications between mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira

The sixth meeting of the working group was held on 26 November 2019, at ANACOM's headquarters in Lisbon, to study and analyse the most suitable technical and financial configuration for the timely replacement of the submarine cables carrying communications between mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira (CAM).

Altice Portugal, NOS Comunicações, Vodafone Portugal - Comunicações Pessoais and NOWO/ONI participated in this meeting. The operators presented their points of view on the prospect of using the new CAM Ring, identified technical requirements and gave suggestions (configuration, capacity and business model). Altice Portugal explained the contingency plans to cope with the possibility of the early withdrawal of the international connections supporting CAM connections or the need to extend its useful lifetime, if necessary.

CAM Ring configuration models were discussed, with the working group having converged on configuration options.

The representatives in the group provided clarifications and shared information on developments occurred since the fifth meeting, held on 15 November with the participation of the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology), which presented the projects of connectivity between the research and teaching communities.

At this meeting (15 November), in addition to various points in common with the sixth meeting, i.e. sharing of information about the developments that have occurred and debate on CAM Ring configuration models, the group also discusses business and funding models, considering the possibility of Community funding. In this regard, the debate focused on various support models which could be considered for this project.

The next working group meeting will be held on 16 December 2019.
