Customers of high-speed networks increased by 10.4% in 2019


The number of residential customers of high-speed networks and services in fixed locations reached 2.8 million at the end of 2019, corresponding to an increase of 10.4% compared to the value recorded in 2018. By region, the most significant increases in 2019 year-on-year were recorded in the Centre region (17.6%), the Autonomous Region of the Azores (16.4%) and in the Alentejo (16.2%).

At the end of the period under review, close to 67.3% of households subscribed to high-speed services at fixed locations, and it is estimated that at least 5.3 million homes were cabled with a high-speed network, corresponding to 43% more than in the previous year. This rise implies that approximately 84.5% of accommodation units cabled with at least one high-speed service at a fixed location by the end of 2019, corresponding to 3.4 percentage points (p.p.) more than at the end of 2018.

By technology, the number of homes units cabled with optic fibre (Fibre to the Home – FTTH) amounted to around 4.98 million at the end of 2019, reaching a coverage of 78.7%and having increased by 6.7% in relation to the end of 2018. The regions with most significant increases of coverage in 2019 were the Algarve, the Centre and the Autonomous Region of the Azores, with 8.5%, 7.4% and 7.2% more, respectively.

Regarding, high-speed accesses based on cable TV networks (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial – HFC), the number of cabled homes increased slightly (+0.3%) in 2019, amounting to 3.76 million and reaching a coverage of 59.5%.
