The number of fixed network telephone accesses dropped to 4.2 million during the third quarter of 2003, for a quarterly variation of -0.61% that confirmed the downward trend observed in recent quarters, indicate data compiled by the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM). Service penetration was thus 40.72 accesses per 100 inhabitants.
During the same period, the fixed telephony market share of Portugal Telecom group companies, measured by the number of accesses, stood at 93.45%, slightly less than the 93.59% registered in the previous quarter. The remaining operators therefore accounted for 6.55% of all accesses during the third quarter of last year, versus 6.41% in the previous quarter.
When the number of calls originating in fixed networks is measured, the PT group companies' share was 81.82%, versus 82.15% in the previous quarter, a variation that otherwise confirms the slow but steady reduction of the historic operator's market share in recent quarters. The remaining operators' share was therefore 18.18% in the third quarter of 2003, versus 17.85% in the previous quarter.
A similar situation was observed in the market shares calculated based on connection minutes, with the PT group's share dropping from 88.80% in the second quarter to 87.93% in the third quarter of last year. Inversely, the share of call minutes routed by the remaining operators rose from 11.20% to 12.07% during the period under review.
Total traffic originated during the third quarter of 2003 was approximately 2.95 billion minutes, resulting from 705.8 million calls made. The figure for total generated minutes is 9.17% less than in the second quarter of 2003 and 16.14% less than in the same period of 2002.
In the third quarter of 2003 average call length dropped slightly to 4.18 minutes, versus the 4.03 minutes of the previous quarter.
At the end of the third quarter of 2003 there were 25 providers authorised to provide fixed telephone service, 12 of which were operational. Of these, 2 provided the service only via direct access, 3 only via indirect access and 7 using both access types.
At the end of the same quarter, there were 108,804 non-mobile ported numbers, 21.17% more than at the end of the second quarter of 2003.
