COVID-19 - Rise in Internet use leads to increase in tests via NET.mede

The increased use of the Internet due to the sheltering in place resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic is leading to a significant increase in the number of tests on the speed of Internet access services performed via NET.mede (through a browser), both in residential fixed accesses and in mobile accesses.

In terms of residential fixed accesses, in the pre-pandemic phase, around 2,000 tests were carried out via NET.mede, a number that more than doubled with the pandemic. In the week 13 to 19 April, 4,515 daily tests were recorded. The time of day when most tests were performed was between 3 pm and 7 pm, decreasing after that time. Among other things, this result reflects the effect of teleworking and distance learning.

With regard to mobile accesses, the average number of daily tests more than tripled this week, compared to the pre-pandemic period. In the week 13 to 19 April, more than 1,300 tests were carried out, less frequently at weekends. With regard to daily distribution, the testing of mobile accesses peaked at 3 pm, with the period during which the greatest number of tests were carried out extending until 10 pm. Prior to the pandemic, NET.mede tests peaked between 6 pm and 10 pm.

In the week 13 to 19 April, Lisbon, Porto and Oeiras were the municipalities with the highest number of tests, both in terms of residential fixed accesses and mobile accesses.
