The 150th anniversary of submarine cables in Portugal, celebrated on 8 June last, was marked by the launch of a commemorative stamp by CTT - Correios de Portugal.
Portugal is now the only country in the world with direct connections via submarine cable to all the continents (except Antarctica), with 12 international optical submarine system moorings. In addition, submarine cables are also essential for maintaining the territorial cohesion (social and economic) of the country, assuring the completeness of the domestic connection between the mainland, the Azores and Madeira, as well as connecting all of the islands on these archipelagos.
The commemorative stamp by designer João Machado recalls the role played by submarine cables in national and international communications, as well as their contribution to the development of the information society and for connecting different parts of the world.
This stamp will come into circulation on a particularly relevant day, as 27 August 1893 saw the inauguration of telegraph communications between the mainland and the Azores, through the submarine cable linking Carcavelos and Ponta Delgada.
